Does Cupping Hurt? The Truth About This Traditional Therapy

Short answer: Cupping does not cause pain in the conventional sense — the sensation is mainly a gentle pulling and tightness on the skin, completely different from pain caused by impact or injury. The round marks left after cupping (if any) are a sign of stagnant energy/blood being drawn to the surface, not tissue damage.

How does cupping work?

The therapist uses cups (usually glass or silicone) to create suction pressure on the skin, pulling the skin and superficial muscle tissue upward. This suction stimulates local blood circulation, helping release deep muscle tension points that regular hand massage struggles to reach.

What cupping actually feels like

Most guests describe the sensation as being “pulled and tightened” rather than sharp pain. Some long-tense muscle areas (shoulders, upper back) may feel slightly sore during cupping — similar to the feeling of being pressed on exactly the right sore spot — pleasant rather than uncomfortable for most guests who’ve tried it.

Why do round marks appear after cupping?

According to traditional medicine, the color and intensity of the round marks reflect the level of stagnant energy/blood in that area — the more tense an area has been for a long time, the darker the mark tends to be. This is NOT a bruise from injury, but temporary dilation of capillaries under the skin caused by suction pressure. The marks typically fade within 3–7 days, are painless, and require no special care.

Cupping at Healthy Spa

The Cupping service at Healthy Spa lasts 50 minutes, combining cupping with acupressure and therapeutic massage — not just cupping alone but a full treatment that helps relieve shoulder, neck, and back pain from prolonged sitting or standing.

Who should and shouldn’t get cupping?

Suitable for those with chronic muscle aches, tense shoulders and neck from office work. Should be avoided if you have open wounds, skin conditions, or are pregnant (consult first). If it’s your first time, let the therapist know so they can adjust the suction pressure to your comfort level.
